It never happened before that I looked at a game and was sad that I don’t play on consoles.

Guerrilla Games

Horizon: Zero Dawn managed to do just that.

I’m currently watching two let’s plays of it one by Christopher Odd (Get the gods damn power cells already) and one by Adam Koebel with his usually insightful comments about world building, character and quest design from a game developers perspective.

At this point it’s Chiara’s and my daily soap to watch.

They did so much right with this game but still got something wrong that I’ve never seen done right in a game, or a movie.

First: There main character needs more muscle mass to be able to pull off what she’s doing. People shouldn’t be allowed to put

Archery in a game without spending at least one day learning to shoot. Just feeling how hard it is to actually use a Longbow will change there perspective. Hunting and War bows aren’t sporting toys that require little Draw Weight For example Medieval British Longbows had a Draw Weight between

100–185 lbf (440–820 N). I trained up to be able to use one with 160

lbf. Took me 5 years to get there and I was already pretty strong to begin with.

Second: What she’s doing is wrong in so far as the movement looks pretty but it’s ineffective not to say outright stupid. Once again send your animation people to learn at least some basic fighting skills. Not only is it a good workout it will also prevent stupid errors like putting a characters weight on the wrong foot or creating a bottom heavy spear.

Third: Weapon and Armor design. For the love of whatever you think is holy design something functional first and than make it pretty. Putting random pieces of metal atop some plain leather is not functional armor it’s not even functional clothing. It’s garbage.

That said if you are a PS4 player get this game. It has one of the best settings I’ve ever seen in a game. It is fucking pretty and the writing is damn good as well.

Thx for getting me hooked Chiara.

It sure is a casual game but one that’s entertaining to even someone like me.

Don’t get me wrong this one you want to play for the story, the references, the art design and the kick ass soundtrack not the gameplay.

pro tip: play it together with someone who’s as much into the subject matter as you and have plenty a drinks at hand.
