Trump administration forces US youth group to drop pro-LGBTI guidance

An investigation by the Des Moines Register has revealed that pressure from the Trump Administration forced 4-H groups to drop guidance welcoming LGBTI youth. 4-H are a global network of agricultural youth organizations with over 6million members. The 4-H names derives from the group’s original motto: ‘head, heart, hands, and health.’

In the US, the organization’s administered by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). As such, the government has power over how it is run. In March, 4-H introduced new guidance to ensure LGBTI members felt welcomed and supported. This included recognizing gender identity and allowing trans kids to use their preferred bathrooms.

wow i didn’t know 17% of all hate crimes are about being gay or bi and less than 2% were about being trans. that’s fucked up. ppl act like just bc same sex marriage is legal homophobia is over now.

  • Frankly transphobia towards trans women is often also homophobia. The unwashed asshole out there is not sophisticated enough to make a difference. 
  • Hate crime reporting is, at best, wonky in the US. 
  • Hate crimes against trans people end in murder or attempted murder way more often than towards any other group.
  • Intersectionality is an important factor as well. The most at risk group are transgender women of colour.

If they become law, they will be the among the most progressive trans laws in the world. They will remove a child’s sex being automatically included on birth certificates. Tasmania, an island state just south of the Australian mainland, has a poor history when it comes to LGBTI rights. As recently as the 1980s, state premier Robin Gray said gay people were unwelcome on the island. The state didn’t decriminalize homosexual sexual activity until 1997. It also only decriminalized cross-dressing in 2000.

Fortunately, for sexual minorities and trans people, it has progressed rapidly since that time. Like the rest of Australia, it has equal age of consent laws, same-sex marriage and gay adoption. However, it only recognizes a trans person’s gender if they have undergone gender reassignment procedures and, if married, divorced.

Content safeguards are a challenging aspect of operating scaled platforms. We’re continuously assessing further steps we can take to improve and there is no higher priority for our team.
